Jazz Festival Picks-
by Rainbow Robert - Manager of Artistic Programming
links & editorial commentary by kp (June 20, 2014)
Here are the top 5 festival picks from our hard working, astute, ear to the ground, manager of artistic programming - Ms. Rainbow Robert. Rainbow is responsible for most of the local programming (and some touring artists - Darius Jones etc) in the festival as well as special project development such as TIME. She goes to great lengths to ensure that our local jazz / improv / music community is properly represented and respected. After all, we are a grass roots organization serving the art form and our community. Did I mention that she's also (her 2nd hat) the executive director of Jazz Festivals Canada? (kp)
This irreverent indie art rock freakout from Montreal puts on a dumbfounding show. After hearing reports from multiple events where the their performance was called out as the sleeper hit of the entire festival, including: All Tomorrows Parties (ATP), Sappyfest, and Sled Island, I finally saw them live in Montreal in November of 2012, and was left with an indelible impression, I won’t spoil the surprise, you should probably just go and see them on Friday...
Darius Jones
Darius Jones is an astounding artist who epitomizes genuine versatility. In addition to leading his own exceptional jazz trio and quartet, Darius is also a member of Brooklyn based noise outfit Little Women, and the leader of a new female vocal quartet Elizabeth-Caroline Unit, for which he has written an entirely new language. This upcoming performance by Darius Jones Quartet will be particularly special as he will be performing the compositions from his quartet album backed by Eric Revis' trio Tarbaby which also features Orrin Evans and Nasheet Waits. If I were to pick one touring highlight from the entire festival, this would be it.
Tommy Babin and Skye Brooks
The Afternoon Sessions at the Ironworks will be the perfect environment to see two of Vancouver's rhythmic luminaries perform solo. Solo performances are somewhat rare within the festival context, so it will be a particularly beautiful to see each of these amazing artists perform solo in a setting where there will also be an opportunity to interact with the artists and hear them speak a bit about their work.
Tony Wilson
This concert will be another remarkable edition of the Afternoon Sessions at the Ironworks series. There are very few things on this earth that I can think of that I would rather do than hear Tony Wilson play the music of Albert Ayler, very few indeed, particularly once you take into account the fact that Dylan van der Schyff, André Lachance, and John Paton are all in the band.
Film in Music - June 21 - The Ironworks - 11:30pm
Peggy Lee
Any band lead by Peggy Lee is worth following to the ends of the earth to hear a single note, as far as I am concerned. Her most current project Film in Music features such a stupefying lineup of Vancouver's creative music geniuses that I shant even utter their names lest I burst into flames.
